After I pulled Sunny out of the gardens, my legs wobbly and stars in my eyes from his stellar performance, I kept him on my arm for the rest of the night. I was lonely by myself, and more than a tad bit self-conscious in a room full of gorgeous women.

I had to admit, I was usually the one standing out in a crowd in Terrin.

But there I was feeling like the damn toad at the party with women far more powerful, and more beautiful, around me.

If there was one reminder of why Celora sucked, this was it.

I held onto Sunny’s arm harder as we made our way around, greeting people. Sunny fit in perfectly. He was polite yet confident, smiled dazzlingly, and spoke eloquently.

I was feeling like I was dating the most popular guy there, and I was even finding myself jealous of him.

One fucking day in Celora—and it better had just been one day—and I was as stuck up as everyone else.

Sunny’s words from the garden replayed in my mind, and I tried to push aside the cement mix of hope and doubt that pooled heavily in my chest.

If I believed for one moment I was as good as these other gods, would it help strengthen me? Or would it make the fall worse when I was proven wrong?

As we walked around the party, the crowd far thicker than it had been earlier in the evening, Sunny’s steps faltered.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“I’m sorry, Celeste, I don’t feel well,” Sunny said, stopping to grab onto the side of his head.

“Did you wear yourself out that much?” I teased. “You’re the one that offered, but maybe we should’ve held off. I know you’ve been partying all day.”

He smiled sheepishly. “I’m sorry, Celeste. I didn’t think I’d been overdoing it. I didn’t drink anything here—not after the club.” He blushed, and I kissed him softly before leading him to a corner where two empty chairs stood. I helped him to sit and plopped down beside him.

“Well, let’s be careful from here on out. We can’t have you falling asleep yet. We still haven’t found a single god that can help us out around here.”

He shook his head. “I don’t think it’s possible to sleep. I feel like my head is splitting open.”

His amiable smile faded, and a grimace slid onto his lips.

“What’s wrong with him?” Von asked, walking over to join us. I sighed in relief.

“I don’t know. He has a headache.” I touched his forehead on instinct, sweeping aside his damp bangs and checking for any signs of what was ailing him. I’d been a teacher after all, so I was used to the pop-up bout of illness.

“I know how he feels,” Von said, kneeling beside Sunny. “My head is starting to hurt, too.”

“Too much drinking?” I asked. Now I knew that guy could drink.

“Yeah, I can’t say I’ve ever had anything as hard as that fucking stuff you gods dish out. I guess it’s putting me on my ass.
